The "Digital Archive of Lisbon's Shopkeepers" intends to organize the historical collections of UACS, a Lisbon's retail trade representative with a history that goes back to 1870. The documentation allows the researcher to study the associational life of the city's retail trade for the past 150 years. Although rich and diverse, the collection is disorganized and poorly preserved, which represents a great risk of loss to this memory of the Lisbon trade. The historical archive’s organization and online accessibility, with documentation from the years between 1870 and 1974, will be made along with the digitization of some of the relevant series and with the establishment of a management plan for the maintenance of a sustainable policy of memory preservation by UACS.
Considering that it is a historical archive, and that one of the objectives is to make the information clear, organized and accessible, in a way that meets the users’ needs, the work involved will consist in the evaluation, classification, sorting and description of the documents, placing them in the context of production and always having in mind the potential user, especially historians and other researchers as well as the general public.
The archival organization and description will be made using international standards and guidelines, incorporated in AtoM program. AtoM is an archival description web application which is based on rules from the International Council on Archives. AtoM is an acronym for access to memory, and is an open source application. This archive belongs to União de Associações de Comércio e Serviços and it is being handled through collaboration between UACS and the Instituto de História Contemporânea, from Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The project is being funded by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian through its program "Concurso de Recuperação, Tratamento e Organização de Acervos Documentais 2016".
